What Material do we use?
We use a 3D Filament called PLA or PLA+ (Polylactic acid) that is made from fermented plant starches, such as corn, sugarcane, sugar beet, or cassava. The process of making PLA involves the following steps:
-
Fermentation: The plant is fermented to produce lactic acid.
-
Polymerization: The lactic acid is polymerized to create PLA.
-
Extrusion: The PLA is extruded into a filament or fiber.
PLA is a bio-based thermoplastic polyester that is biodegradable, recyclable, and carbon-neutral. It is also FDA-approved for food contact.
Additives
PLA can be mixed with other materials to change its properties. For example, carbon fiber can increase stiffness, while wood fiber can change its appearance.
These additives are called PLA+.
We also use a PLA Silk which have additives added to PLA to give it a silky, shiny appearance.
